How to Make Homemade Body Powder

Most commercial powders contain talc. Recent studies have shown that accidental or repeated inhalation of talc contributes to lung problems and may cause cancer. Talc should used with caution around infants and small children. You can make your own homemade body powders using ingredients that are safe and just as effective. It is also more economical and you can make the body powder with essential oils to create a personalized fragrance.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Jar that will hold 2 cups
  • 1 Cup of Rice Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Cornstarch
  • 15 drops of essential oil
  1. Step 1
Place the cornstarch and rice flour in a resealable jar. A mason jar, or a reused glass jar with a lid, works well.
  2. Step 2
Add 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Invigorating scents work well in body powder. Some invigorating essential oils to consider are mint, rosemary, or lavender. Rosewood also has a very enjoyable fragrance that is commonly used in making perfume. If you would like your powder to have a masculine scent consider patchouli oil.
  3. Step 3
Place the lid on the jar and shake well to mix the ingredients. You can punch holes in the lid of the jar to create a shaker of body powder, or you can simply unscrew the lid and use a puff to apply the powder.
  4. Step 4
You can decorate the jar with ribbons, or add dried flowers, for a homemade touch for gift giving. Homemade body powder makes a wonderful, inexpensive gift.

Things You’ll Need:

  • 3-4 ounces glycerin melt and pour soap base
  • 1 1/2 tsp oatmeal
  • soap mold
  • wooden or metal spoon
  • serrated knife
  • microwave-safe 2 cup measuring cup
  • spray bottle filled with rubbing alcohol
  • microwave oven

Instructions

Step 1:
Assembly all your tools and ingredients next to the microwave oven.
Step 2:
Chop the glycerin soap base into cubes.
Step 3:
Place half of the oatmeal into the bottom of the mold.
Step 4:
Put soap cubes into the measuring cup and heat in the microwave on high for 40 seconds. Stir. Continue to heat and stir the soap base at 10 second intervals until cubes are completely melted.
Step 5:
Pour melted soap from the measuring cup into the mold, filling it 1/2 way. If the soap begins to harden before you are finished, simply reheat and stir.

How to Make Liquid Castile Soap at Home

Castile soap is commonly found in health food stores due to it's mild and natural ingredients. If you want a greener alternative to commercial soap, or have concerns about the chemicals in most soaps, Castile soap is the solution. Castile soap gets it's name from the Castile region of Spain which is known for it's production of olive oil. Castile soap is made mostly of olive oil, making it gentle and hydrating to your skin.

Things You'll Need:
  1. Heat the olive oil to 80 degrees. You will allow it to cool to 75 degrees before adding the lye.
  2. As the olive oil is cooling dissolve the lye into the 12 cups of water. Use a wooden spoon to stir the lye as it dissolves. Use extreme caution when mixing and pouring lye! Work in a well ventilated area, wear eye protection and keep some vinegar handy in case you get some lye on your skin. The vinegar will neutralize the lye.
  3. After you have the lye dissolved in the water and the olive oil has cooled to 75 degrees, slowly add the lye to the olive oil. Stir well and continue stirring for 15 minutes as the liquid Castile soap cools.
Tips & Warnings
  • Liquid castile soap is excellent for dry skin.
  • After the soap has cooled, you can add essential oils for natural fragrance if desired.

As the largest organ of the body, our skin serves some important functions. It protects us from the environment. It regulates our body temperature. Our skin also allows us to feel things. The look and feel of our skin speaks volumes about our overall health. Diet, exercise, and lifestyles are all revealed by the appearance of our skin. In addition to eating right and living well to care for our skin, keeping skin properly hydrated can do wonders for it's appearance.Socrates, the father of modern medicine, used hydration therapy as a “water cure” for many illnesses. Keeping the skin and body hydrated is an important part of any beauty routine. For these reasons, it is only natural that homemade spa treatments, made from natural ingredients, be part of any organic beauty care routine. Homemade salt scrubs and sugar scrubs are just a few natural elements that can be used in organic and natural skin care recipes.

Homemade Salt Scrub Recipe

Salt is readily available in most kitchens. It contains astringent and antiseptic properties when used on the skin in beauty and cosmetic recipes. Salt also works well for sloughing dead skin cells from the skin and scalp. It can be used to make your own salt scrubs at home. They have been used throughout time to beautify skin by sloughing off dead skin cells. The oil in this homemade salt scrub recipe will lubricate the skin at the same time. It also stimulates blood flow to the surface of the skin.
  • 2 cups salt
  • 1 cup olive, coconut, or avocado oil
Mix the salt and oil together. A few drops of essential oil can be added to enhance the smell of the salt scrub. After a bath or shower, massage with the salt scrub beginning with the feet and working upward. Do not use the scrub anywhere that skin is sensitive. After the entire body is covered, rinse off with warm water. Any unused salt scrub should be stored in the refrigerator for up to 2 months.

Homemade Sugar Scrub Recipe

A sugar scrub is made using exactly the same proportions as those above in the homemade salt scrub recipe. Two cups of sugar and 1 cup oil are oil combined to make a skin scrub paste. A few drops of essential oil can be added for scent. Lavender essential oil is always a skin care favorite. Small amounts of vitamin C, lemon juice, or aloe vera gel, can be added to help further nourish the skin. The sugar scrub is not as abrasive as the salt scrub and can be used with the same benefits. Sugar scrubs slough off dead skin cells, while improving circulation. The oil used in the scrub hydrates and moisturizes the skin.
