How to Make Homemade Body Powder

Most commercial powders contain talc. Recent studies have shown that accidental or repeated inhalation of talc contributes to lung problems and may cause cancer. Talc should used with caution around infants and small children. You can make your own homemade body powders using ingredients that are safe and just as effective. It is also more economical and you can make the body powder with essential oils to create a personalized fragrance.

Difficulty: Easy

Things You'll Need:

  • Jar that will hold 2 cups
  • 1 Cup of Rice Flour
  • 1/2 Cup Cornstarch
  • 15 drops of essential oil
  1. Step 1
Place the cornstarch and rice flour in a resealable jar. A mason jar, or a reused glass jar with a lid, works well.
  2. Step 2
Add 15 drops of your favorite essential oil. Invigorating scents work well in body powder. Some invigorating essential oils to consider are mint, rosemary, or lavender. Rosewood also has a very enjoyable fragrance that is commonly used in making perfume. If you would like your powder to have a masculine scent consider patchouli oil.
  3. Step 3
Place the lid on the jar and shake well to mix the ingredients. You can punch holes in the lid of the jar to create a shaker of body powder, or you can simply unscrew the lid and use a puff to apply the powder.
  4. Step 4
You can decorate the jar with ribbons, or add dried flowers, for a homemade touch for gift giving. Homemade body powder makes a wonderful, inexpensive gift.
